How the world’s biggest shopping mall is becoming the next eBay
Walmart announced Tuesday it is adding 10 million online customers to its U.S. e-commerce marketplace by the end of 2017.
The retailer said the new online marketplace will be available to more than 200 million consumers, including more than 150 million in the U.K. and about 30 million in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
Walmart plans to sell goods online through the site, which will include a number of features including shopping carts, coupons, loyalty programs and special offers.
Walmart says the new marketplace will allow its customers to shop on more than 350 million products, and offer the best selection, lowest prices, and lowest shipping rates in the world.
“We have been working on this platform for many years and we believe it will help to make shopping more fun, more enjoyable and more secure for our customers,” said Scott Waring, vice president and general manager of global online merchandising at Walmart, in a statement.
Wal-Mart said the addition of the new store in London will help its e-tailer compete with retailers like Amazon and eBay, which it has already invested heavily in.
The company has more than 20 million customers in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia, according to its latest quarterly financial report.
